
The roulette table layout converts groups of wheel pockets into places where chips can be positioned. Once you understand the boundaries, intersections and outside boxes, you can identify what any chip covers without memorising dozens of names.
The numbered grid
Numbers 1–36 appear in twelve rows of three. Looking from the zero end, the first row contains 1, 2 and 3; the next contains 4, 5 and 6. The three vertical lines form columns: 1, 4, 7 and so on; 2, 5, 8; and 3, 6, 9. Zero sits above or beside the grid depending on table orientation. American layouts include both 0 and 00.
Chip position defines coverage
A chip in the centre of a number covers one pocket. Move it to a border and it covers the two numbers touching that border. Move it to a four-way intersection and it covers four. Place it at the outer edge of a row and it can cover three or six numbers, according to the position.
At a physical table, the dealer resolves borderline placements. Online interfaces normally highlight every covered number before the spin. Use that preview, particularly on a small screen.
Inside betting positions
Straight up
Place the chip inside one numbered box. It covers one pocket and pays 35:1. Any number, including zero, can normally be played straight up.
Split
Place the chip on the line shared by two adjacent numbers. It pays 17:1. Numbers separated on the grid cannot form a standard split even if they are neighbours on the wheel.
Street
Place the chip on the outside edge of a horizontal row such as 10–11–12. It covers three numbers and pays 11:1.
Corner
Place the chip where four numbered boxes meet, such as 8–9–11–12. It pays 8:1.
Six line
Place the chip where the outer edge divides two adjacent streets. It covers six numbers and pays 5:1.
Outside betting positions
Dozens
First 12 covers 1–12, second 12 covers 13–24 and third 12 covers 25–36. Each pays 2:1. Zero is outside all three.
Columns
Each “2 to 1” box covers the twelve-number column aligned with it. Columns pay 2:1. A visual layout that is rotated on screen can make columns appear horizontal, so follow the 2:1 label rather than screen direction.
Even-money bets
Red/black, odd/even and low/high each cover 18 of the numbers from 1 to 36 and pay 1:1. Low normally means 1–18 and high means 19–36. Zero and double zero lose unless a special rule modifies settlement.
Zero-area bets
Single-zero layouts can support combinations involving zero and nearby grid numbers, such as the trio 0–1–2 or 0–2–3 and the first four 0–1–2–3. Exact availability and payout should be displayed by the table.
The American top line or basket covers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. Its 6:1 payout creates a 7.89% house edge, higher than the normal 5.26% on other standard American wagers.
French announced bets
French and European tables may offer wheel-sector bets that refer to physical neighbours rather than grid adjacency. Common examples include Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre and Orphelins. They require multiple chips distributed across specified splits, corners or straight-up positions.
These wagers do not reduce the house edge merely because they follow wheel order. They offer a convenient way to cover a sector and can produce a different volatility profile.
Outside does not mean “better”
Outside bets hit more often but pay less. Inside bets hit less often and pay more. On standard European roulette, the house edge is normally 2.70% for both. The decision is about variance and entertainment preference, not discovering a payout loophole.
Overlapping bets
Multiple chips can cover the same result. Suppose one unit is placed on red and one on a dozen. A red number inside that dozen wins both bets; a black number in the dozen loses red but wins two units on the dozen; a red number outside loses the dozen but wins red. Calculate the whole portfolio rather than treating each chip as a separate strategy.
Chip values and table limits
Tables may impose different minimums for inside and outside wagers and a maximum per position. Physical roulette sometimes uses non-value colour chips assigned to an individual player, while cash chips retain printed denomination. Confirm values before betting and cash out colour chips according to house procedure.
Practice exercise
Choose six results—0, 7, 12, 19, 26 and 33—and write down which standard outside bets win for each. Then select a corner and identify its four pockets. Finally, use the odds calculator to compare a corner with four separate straight-up bets. The same pockets are covered, but the chip mechanics and total stake differ.

- Review total stake, not just the largest chip.

Reading sector and neighbour interfaces
Many digital tables include a racetrack-shaped panel representing physical wheel order. Clicking a number plus neighbours distributes chips on that number and a chosen count of adjacent wheel pockets. Review the resulting chip count: “five neighbours” may mean five on each side plus the centre, not five pockets total.
Announced French bets use fixed chip distributions. Voisins du Zéro covers the large sector around zero, Tiers du Cylindre covers the opposite third and Orphelins covers pockets outside those two groups. Zero Spiel is a narrower zero sector. Names describe wheel geography, not a probability advantage.
How payouts combine
A sector wager is a bundle of standard bets. Different hits can therefore pay different amounts depending on how many chips cover the winning number and whether they sit straight up, split or corner. Evaluate minimum total stake and the least favourable covered return before assuming the whole sector pays uniformly.
Frequently asked layout questions
Why are red and black not arranged in a simple pattern?
The numbered grid follows arithmetic order while colours and wheel order are designed separately. Colour balance exists across 1–36, but local grid and wheel sequences do not alternate perfectly.
Are 1–18 and the first dozen the same?
No. Low covers 1–18 and pays 1:1. First dozen covers 1–12 and pays 2:1. Numbers 13–18 win low but lose first dozen.
Can zero be odd or even?
No under standard roulette settlement. Zero is a separate green pocket and causes both odd and even bets to lose unless a qualifying special rule modifies the returned stake.
What is a neighbour bet?
It covers consecutive pockets on the physical wheel, not consecutive integers. The European number next to 0 on one side is 32 and on the other is 26.
Accessibility and mobile use
Small layouts can make borders difficult to distinguish. Use zoom, highlighted coverage and a confirmation panel. Colour alone should not be the only cue; number labels and position remain essential for users with colour-vision differences.
Practise by naming the covered pockets before spinning. The objective is not faster wagering. It is preventing placement and denomination errors.

A short favourable run cannot validate a strategy, while a short unfavourable run cannot measure its full distribution.
